Thriller by iatesatan Thriller by iatesatan
This is one of the pictures my friend :iconjellybat: took of the wooden hand that I just finished making. This hilarious shot happened when someone told me to strike a Michael Jackson pose with the hand. So naturally I immediately rose onto my toes and grabbed my crotch. I'm so in love with this shot I think it's because it kinda looks like a Calvin Klein ad. I'm gonna make this new my DA ID.

Comments, criticism, and suggestions always welcome!

I think i have the general idea of the 'blueprints' of this, but I do have a question or two:
1) which way does the strings and springs go? Does the one towards the front close the fingers and the back ones open them? The spring is set to stretch when you make a fist, and is connected to the back string correct?
2) Is each finger section a separate piece (6 free moving pieces), or is the previous knuckle connected at a fixed point (three moving pieces)?

Hi, sorry for replying so late. I'll answer your questions in order.

1) The wire connected to the spring runs along the back of the hand and the wire running up to my fingers runs along the bottom of the hand. The spring actually constricts when I make a fist and opens when I open the hand. When making an animatronic hand it needs two forces, one to close the fingers and one to open them. My fingers pulling on the wire serve as the force to close the hand while the spring serves as the force to open it.

You can see it more clearly here.

2) Each finger has five moving parts. You are correct in thinking that the knuckle is a separate piece but the first joint is fixed in the main body of the hand. So, it does not move.

Nice dude! I'm looking to build something like for a costume. How's it working? Does the thumb move as well?

The thumb does move but not well. There is too much tension on the line since it has to travel through so much wood. With a little bit of a redesign I'm sure it would work as well as the other fingers.

Wow!
This is one cool arm extension! worn on both arms, together with fitting gloves, guns, and the Sieben-Meilen-Stiefel it would look fantastic.

You have blueprints of these?

Here is a work log for the hand. It doesn't have to many details at the moment but I'd be happy to answer any of your questions in that thread.
